Isopogon prostratus, commonly known as prostrate cone-bush, is a species of plant in the family Proteaceae and is endemic to south-eastern Australia. It is a prostrate shrub with divided leaves with linear lobes, and more or less spherical heads of yellow flowers on the ends of branchlets.

How to spot it

Isopogon prostratus is a prostrate, spreading shrub that typically grows to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in diameter and has reddish branchlets. The leaves are 40–100 mm (1.6–3.9 in) long and divided, with linear lobes 1–2 mm (0.039–0.079 in) wide on a petiole up to 60 mm (2.4 in) long. The flowers are arranged on the ends of branchlets in sessile, more or less spherical heads 25–35 mm (0.98–1.38 in) in diameter, with egg-shaped involucral bracts at the base. Pultenaea pedunculata, commonly known as matted bush-pea, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae and is endemic to south-eastern Australia. It is a prostrate, densely matted shrub with softly-hairy branches that often form roots, narrow elliptic leaves, and bright yellow and brick-red flowers.

How to spot it

Pultenaea peduncluata is a prostrate, densely-matted shrub that forms carpets of 1 m (3 ft 3 in) or more in diameter, and has softy-hairy branches. The branches are up to several metres long but rarely more than 20 cm (7.9 in) off the ground, and often from roots to it. The leaves are arranged alternately, narrow elliptic, 6–11 mm (0.24–0.43 in) long, 1–2 mm (0.039–0.079 in) wide and sparsely hairy with stipules 2–3 mm (0.079–0.118 in) long at the base. One of the two dominant tree species of Beowa National Park's dry eucalypt forest, alongside red bloodwood. Its timber has long been used commercially for construction, flooring and export woodchips.

How to spot it

Rough, fibrous bark on the trunk and larger branches with smooth white-to-yellow bark above. Glossy green, lance-shaped adult leaves 85-195mm long, and white flowers in groups of 7-15 followed by barrel-shaped or conical fruit.

The second of Beowa National Park's two dominant tree species, forming dry coastal forest alongside silvertop ash. Its rough, tessellated bark and strong, durable timber made it a favoured species for fencing and mining supports.

How to spot it

Rough, tessellated bark from trunk to smaller branches, lance-shaped adult leaves 55-160mm long, and flower buds arranged in groups of seven opening to creamy white flowers from December to June, followed by urn-shaped woody fruit.

The only species in its genus, this evergreen tree grows along rainforest margins from Queensland into New South Wales and is named among the rainforest-pocket species tucked into Beowa National Park's sheltered gullies.

How to spot it

Compound leaves with 5-9 leaflets (fewer than the related red cedar, which has 8-20). Reddish, three-lobed capsule fruit matures December-January, splitting to reveal two or three seeds wrapped in a red aril.

A member of the olive family found in the scattered rainforest pockets tucked into sheltered gullies within Beowa National Park's otherwise dry eucalypt forest.

How to spot it

A small rainforest tree with glossy, veined, opposite leaves typical of the olive family, growing in the moister gully refuges of an otherwise fire-adapted dry-forest landscape.

A ground-dwelling songbird now reduced to around 2,500 individuals across four isolated populations spanning eastern New South Wales and southern Queensland. Main Range National Park's fauna section names it among the park's threatened species, part of the small northern population that numbers only around 40 birds.

How to spot it

Small, brown, secretive bird rarely seen in the open - most often detected by its loud, distinct melodic territorial song. Nests low in dense, clumped grasses and tussocks rather than shrubs or trees, and is reluctant to fly, preferring to run through thick ground cover.
