Pomaderris discolor is a shrub that typically grows to a height of 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in), its stems covered with white, woolly, star-shaped hairs. The leaves are elliptic or egg-shaped, 30–95 mm (1.2–3.7 in) long and 10–40 mm (0.39–1.57 in) wide with stipules 4–6 mm (0.16–0.24 in) long at the base but that fall off as the leaf develops. Corybas fimbriatus, commonly known as the fringed helmet orchid, is a species of terrestrial orchid endemic to eastern Australia. It has a broad egg-shaped to round leaf and a dark reddish purple to crimson flower with translucent patches. It is similar to C. hispidus but its labellum lacks a creamy-white centre and is not covered with bristly hairs.

One of the four original Banksia species collected by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770, and the dominant flowering tree along much of the Victorian coast. Flowers year-round with a peak in autumn, making it a reliable food source for honeyeaters and other nectar-feeders.

How to spot it

A gnarled, often wind-sculpted tree to 25m with rough grey bark and dark green leaves that flash silvery-white on their undersides in the wind. Pale yellow cylindrical flower spikes 10-12cm tall stand upright at branch tips. Common on the dunes and headlands of Wilsons Promontory, Cape Conran, Croajingolong, Discovery Bay and the Mornington Peninsula.
