Endangered — a handful of wild trees near Minyon Falls

Named for Minyon Falls in the heart of the Nightcap Range, this warm-temperate rainforest tree is known from only a small area on the southern side of the Mount Warning caldera, with historical records also from Rocky Creek and Whian Whian. A national Recovery Plan has been developed for its critically restricted population.

How to spot it

Medium-to-large tree to 30m; elliptic to egg-shaped leaves 70-150mm long; white flowers with around fifteen slender petal lobes, followed by blue spherical fruit 20-35mm across. Grows in brush box ecotone and warm temperate rainforest.

The three-toed snake-tooth skink is a species of skink in the family Scincidae. It is endemic to south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales, Australia. It occurs in subtropical rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, and montane forest on rich dark soils on the coast and adjacent ranges; some coastal/island populations occur on pale sands in lowlands.

The yellow-bellied sheath-tailed bat, also known as the yellow-bellied sheathtail or yellow-bellied pouched bat, is a microbat species of the family Emballonuridae found extensively in Australia and less commonly in parts of Papua New Guinea.

How to spot it

The yellow-bellied sheath-tailed bat is quite large with a mean body weight of 44 g that ranges from 28 to 60 g, and a mean head-body length of 81.8 mm that ranges from 72.3-91.9 mm. It has distinct fur colouration, with the dorsal back being a shiny jet black and the ventral underside a contrasting creamy white.
