A papery-barked wetland tree so central to Coombabah Lakelands' Ramsar-listed melaleuca wetlands that the reserve's main boardwalk trail is named after it.

How to spot it

Thick papery bark peeling in layers, grey-green five-veined leaves, cream bottlebrush-like flower spikes spring to early autumn.

Fringes the tidal lake edges of Coombabah Lakelands, one of only five Queensland wetlands on the Ramsar international convention list, sending up pencil-like breathing roots from the mud.

How to spot it

Smooth grey flaking bark, glossy leaves with silvery undersides, pneumatophores (peg roots) standing upright from the mud around the base.
