Parsonsia diaphanophleba is a woody vine of the family Apocynaceae. It is found in Western Australia and is listed as a priority 4 species.

How to spot it

Parsonsia diaphanophleba is a vine, whose woody stems can reach up to 10 m high, Flowering from January to February, April to June or September, its flowers are white/cream and pink.

A tall eucalypt endemic to the forests of southwest WA, prized for hard, insect-resistant timber, and increasingly threatened by Phytophthora cinnamomi dieback — including within John Forrest National Park's own jarrah forest.

How to spot it

Rough, greyish-brown, deeply grooved fibrous bark shedding in long flat strips. Narrow, often-curved lance-shaped leaves 8-13cm long. White-stamened flowers in spring-early summer. Typically 40m tall, occasionally to 50m.

A large flowering tree endemic to southwest WA, growing 40-60m tall, forming the tall open jarrah-marri forests that dominate Lane Poole Reserve alongside jarrah.

How to spot it

Rough, tessellated grey-brown to red-brown bark over the whole trunk (unlike jarrah's fibrous strips). Thick glossy lance-shaped leaves 9-14cm long. White-to-pink flowers Dec-May followed by large woody 'honky nut' gumnuts.

A smooth white-barked eucalypt of southwest WA valued for dense, durable timber and honey production, forming the wandoo woodlands documented on the eastern side of Lane Poole Reserve. Only around 5% of its original habitat remains.

How to spot it

Smooth, powdery white bark, often mottled with grey or light brown patches — unlike jarrah's rough fibrous bark. Greyish-green to greyish-blue lance-shaped leaves 75-125mm. Cream-white flowers in groups of 9-17. Height 3-25m.

Quokka

The quokka is a small, cat-sized macropod restricted to the far south-west of Western Australia, with its largest and best-known population on predator-free Rottnest Island. It is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal, with a stocky build, rounded ears, and a notably short tail for a macropod.

How to spot it

Small (2.5-5 kg), stocky, grizzled brown macropod with a short broad head and a short tail — easiest to see around dusk on Rottnest Island, where habituated animals are commonly encountered near tracks and picnic areas (do not feed or touch them, it's illegal and harmful to the animal). On the mainland it is far more elusive, restricted to dense swamp vegetation and thick forest understorey.

Baudin's black-cockatoo is confined to the tall karri and marri forests of far south-western Australia, where it relies on old-growth hollows for nesting and marri seed capsules for food. It is easily confused with the more common Carnaby's black-cockatoo but has a distinctly longer, narrower bill adapted for extracting marri seeds.

How to spot it

About 56cm, dark grey-black with fine pale scalloping, white cheek patches and a white-banded tail - near-identical to Carnaby's black-cockatoo except for its longer, narrower upper mandible. Best told apart by habitat: Baudin's sticks to tall karri/marri forest rather than Wheatbelt woodland. Its wailing call is softer and higher-pitched than Carnaby's.
