Quokka

About

The quokka is a small, cat-sized macropod restricted to the far south-west of Western Australia, with its largest and best-known population on predator-free Rottnest Island. It is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal, with a stocky build, rounded ears, and a notably short tail for a macropod.

How to spot it

Small (2.5-5 kg), stocky, grizzled brown macropod with a short broad head and a short tail — easiest to see around dusk on Rottnest Island, where habituated animals are commonly encountered near tracks and picnic areas (do not feed or touch them, it's illegal and harmful to the animal). On the mainland it is far more elusive, restricted to dense swamp vegetation and thick forest understorey.
