Thought lost at its original 1887 Walcha collection site, Beadle's grevillea survives in only four known wild populations on shallow granite soils, including a significant population in Guy Fawkes River National Park near Chaelundi Falls, where it was rediscovered in 1981.

How to spot it

Shrub 0.8-2.5m tall with finely dissected, fern-like leaves 80-165mm long; one-sided racemes of grey-to-purplish flowers with a burgundy-to-scarlet style in late spring and summer, followed by woolly-haired seed pods.

A large native river cod found only in the Clarence River system of northern NSW, now surviving mainly in remote, clean sections of the Nymboida/Mann and Guy Fawkes/Sara rivers after disappearing from most of its historic range through overfishing, mining pollution and habitat loss.

How to spot it

A deep-bodied, grouper-like freshwater fish with an intense yellow-gold back and flanks overlaid with dark mottling, giving it a leopard-like pattern; look for it (rarely, given its rarity) in deep clear pools with timber cover.
