About
The smallest of the three living wombat species, found in scattered semi-arid scrub and mallee from the eastern Nullarbor Plain across southern South Australia to the New South Wales border area. It digs large interconnected warren systems shared by up to ten individuals.
How to spot it
Smaller and greyer than the common wombat, with silky fur, a broader, more pig-like snout covered in fine hairs, and pointed ears. Confined to arid and semi-arid mallee/scrub country rather than wet forest - listen for its rough coughing contact call and strident alarm call around warren entrances at dusk.
