Pouched Frog

About

A tiny rainforest frog of south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales named for the male's unique hip pockets, into which hatched tadpoles crawl to complete their development on land rather than in water. Long rated Least Concern by the IUCN, it was uplisted to vulnerable under Australian federal law in September 2023. Kondalilla National Park is noted as habitat for this rare species.

How to spot it

Only about 2.5cm long, red-brown with a dark stripe running from the nostril through the eye. Hands and feet are free of webbing with slightly swollen finger and toe tips. Found in leaf litter and under logs in rainforest gullies - listen for its call rather than expect to spot it.
