NPWS highlights Mebbin National Park's large ancient fig trees along the Byrrill Creek walking track — Moreton Bay fig is the classic massive buttressed fig of these Tweed Valley subtropical rainforests, capable of reaching 60m with supplementary trunks formed from thickened aerial roots.

How to spot it

Imposing plank buttress roots; large, leathery, dark green elliptic leaves 15-30cm long; older specimens send down aerial roots that fuse into extra trunks supporting a huge spreading crown. Grows along watercourses as an emergent rainforest canopy tree.
