Federal Pass is one of the Blue Mountains’ great historic walks — a 1900-built cliff-base track past the Three Sisters and Scenic World, finishing with a genuinely tough climb up the hand-built Giant Stairway.

How hard is it, really?
Most of Federal Pass is a manageable cliff-base walk following the base of the Jamison Valley — but our terrain data shows exactly where the real difficulty is concentrated: a brutal 149m climb packed into under 300m right near the end (around the 8.9-9.2km mark), which lines up precisely with the historic Giant Stairway. After nearly 9km of relatively gentle walking, that final climb is a genuine shock to tired legs — budget energy for it specifically, not just for the overall distance.
What the track is actually like
Originally built in 1900, Federal Pass follows the base of the cliffs through the Jamison Valley from Leura Forest to Katoomba Falls, passing directly beneath the Three Sisters and Scenic World along the way. This is genuine engineering history as much as a nature walk — the hand-built Giant Stairway near the end remains an impressive feat, climbing steeply back up to the clifftop to finish the journey.
Wildlife to watch for
Blue Mountains National Park protects some of NSW’s most significant threatened species, including one of Australia’s most critically endangered birds:
- Regent Honeyeater — critically endangered (IUCN and EPBC-listed), one of the most at-risk birds in Australia and a genuinely significant species to have documented in this park.
- Glossy Black-Cockatoo — vulnerable (IUCN and EPBC-listed), a striking and increasingly uncommon cockatoo.
- Black Sassafras — a Gondwanan rainforest relict, also notably documented on the nearby Ruined Castle and Grand Canyon tracks.
- Powerful Owl and Wedge-tailed Eagle — both genuine sightings possible along the cliff-base sections.
Practical tips
- Save your energy for the Giant Stairway. The hardest climb comes right at the very end, not partway through — don’t burn out early on the relatively gentle cliff-base sections.
- Budget the full 6.5 hours. This is a genuine full-day historic walk, not a quick lookout loop.
- Combine it with the history. Reading up on the 1900 construction of the track and the Giant Stairway adds real context to what you’re walking through.
- Arrange transport for a one-way walk. This is point-to-point between Leura Forest and Katoomba Falls, not a loop.
