Dave’s Creek Circuit trades a genuinely demanding climb for some of the best ridge-top views in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park — a fair exchange for anyone willing to put in the effort.
Quick stats
- Distance: 5.23 km loop
- Elevation gain: 274 m
- Time: ~108 minutes (just under 2 hours)
- Grade: Moderate
- Route type: Loop
- Location: Lamington National Park (Binna Burra), Gold Coast Hinterland, QLD
How hard is it, really?
Our terrain data shows this “moderate” walk has real teeth — 42% of the loop is steep or very steep, and the hardest single stretch is a genuine 60m climb packed into 300m around the 3.9km mark. That’s not a casual ridge stroll; treat the moderate grade as a fair but not soft assessment, especially if you’re combining this with other Binna Burra walks the same day.
What the track is actually like
The reward for the climbing is real: ridge-top walking with knockout views over the Numinbah Valley, a genuine highlight of the Binna Burra network. From the ridge, the track drops through open eucalypt forest — a different character from the denser rainforest lower down — before rejoining the wider trail network back toward the start. The contrast between exposed ridge views and sheltered eucalypt forest gives this loop more variety than its length suggests.
Wildlife to watch for
Lamington National Park’s Binna Burra section protects some of South East Queensland’s most significant rainforest habitat, with genuinely rare species documented here:
- Southern Ochrosia — critically endangered, a rare rainforest tree found in only a handful of locations.
- Ooray (Mullumbimby Native Tamarind) — endangered, with distinctive dark red fruit growing directly off the trunk.
- Richmond Birdwing Vine — near-threatened, the essential food plant of the vulnerable Richmond Birdwing Butterfly.
- Antarctic Beech — an ancient, cool-temperate relict species found in pockets of this park.
- Yellow-bellied glider, Powerful owl and Olive Whistler — all vulnerable, though nocturnal or shy enough that sightings are uncommon on a day walk.
Practical tips
- Time your walk for clear weather. The ridge-top views over Numinbah Valley are the highlight — cloud or haze genuinely diminishes the payoff for the climb.
- Pace yourself before the 3.9km mark. That’s where the steepest sustained climb hits, so don’t burn all your energy on the earlier sections.
- Bring layers for the ridge. Exposed sections can be windier and cooler than the sheltered forest lower down.
- Combine with other Binna Burra walks if you have time — this loop connects into the wider track network.
